I have never let my schooling interfere with my education – Mark Twain
I always have my head on at least one pet project or the other (usually 2 or 3 at a time). I like to define these “pet projects” as things I do cause I want to do them and not because I have to do them (So, basically anything I did for school just flew out the window). These projects have helped me a lot in developing my skills, my network as well as in figuring out what the hell I want to do with my life. These are what define me: who I am, what I do and how I do it; not the Bachelor of Science I will have in 2 years (give or take). So, anyways, enough of my rant and on to the projects themselves.
I’ve split these into 3 groups, current being basically that, projects I am currently involved in. Ideation is the group of ideas I am currently trying to get going and are still in the planning/ideation stage. There is currently no guarantee that these projects will get off the ground but I am working on getting them there. Lastly, past refers to projects I am proud of but am no longer involved in.
Current
Noticing a lack of entrepreneurial spirit at Georgia Tech, I founded this organization in December ‘08. Since then it has worked towards consolidating the Georgia Tech entrepreneurial community and providing opportunities to our members.
When I joined the Undergraduate Council in August ‘08 the group lacked a set purpose as good leadership. Following my election as president of the organization in April ‘09, I led a major revamp of the organization’s structure and the group reincarnated into one of the most influential and largest student organizations within the college.
I am a mentor for the College of Computing’s freshman mentoring program. This has given me a wonderful opportunity to interact with the freshmen and offer them guidance through their time here. It has also improved my repertoire of interesting and funny stories.
Ask me about my “misbegotten mentee” sometime.
A local meetup group for readers of Hacker News that I organize. (Successfully managed to bring this out of the ideation stage.) We meet the 2nd Monday of every month. Stay tuned for more info as to location.
Ideation
The Georgia Tech Mockumentry Project
Planning on making the most epic documentary of all time. Starring your very own Georgia Tech. Need people to join me on this. I need all the skill needed to make a movie, from screenplay writers and actors to camera men and editors.
Coders Anonymous [On hold]
The concept of learning to code individually in a group setting. Read the blog post for all the details please.
Past
Despite popular belief, The Firewall wasn’t originally my idea. Originally conceived as an online newsletter by one of my associates, The Firewall changed into a print magazine based on the direction I set for it. Initially serving as president of the organization, I moved onto other roles later and eventually left the organization in capable hands in order to better focus on my other projects. I do still occasionally write articles for the magazine but primarily serve in an advisory role.
Though this is an ongoing project, I have placed it as a past project due to the amount of effort it requires off of me. Touchdown Nation was the team I worked with at Atlanta Startup Weekend, where we developed a facebook app for Football (the American kind where they do not use their feet [ though I will admit that I have grown to like this sport over the last few years]).
I have been working as a marketing manager for Open Study, an Atlanta startup that makes studying online social.
